Lighter communal housing rules urged

A public meeting of people wanting to live communal lifestyles has called for an easing of resource consent planning rules that do not permit multiple dwellings on rural land.

About 140 people attended at the Ngatimoti hall, west of Nelson.

The meeting also called on Tasman District Council to withhold abatement notices forcing some people who are breaking current rules to leave properties in Tasman.

Resource consent planner Greg Mason, who lives on one of the properties in the Motueka Valley, says the current rules are unnecessarily stringent.
