Three people spent an hour trapped in their car near Picton after the vehicle hit a power pole.
The crash happened at Waikawa about 5am on Saturday.
The impact ripped the pole out of the ground, bringing it crashing down over the vehicle.
The fire service says the group were trapped in their car on Beach Road for about an hour while electricity engineers from Marlborough Lines isolated the power.
Marlborough Lines says a large part of Picton was without power for almost an hour. Most properties had power restored within an hour but a further 151 properties had to wait until just before midday.
Ambulance staff say the car's occupants were not hurt.
