Five dead on holiday roads

5:23 pm on 23 October 2011

The Labour Weekend road toll has climbed to five following a two-car collision north of Auckland.

The driver of one of two cars which collided in Wellsford north of Auckland on Sunday morning died at the scene from chest injuries.

A woman in her 30s has been taken to North Shore Hospital with minor injuries.

Two people died in a single car crash on State Highway 2 in Hastings just after 2am on Sunday.

Both occupants were thrown from the car when it veered off the road and rolled into a ditch.

A motorcyclist who was in a critical condition after crashing into a fence in Wanganui about 7.30pm on Saturday also died overnight.

National road policing manager Superintendent Paula Rose says the toll can change dramatically in a single day.

She says five people died in one day last year, contributing to a Labour Weekend toll of eight.

Ms Rose says there is no common theme in the crashes but says the main problems on the road are a failure to keep left and driver distractions.

She is urging motorists to stay alert and be careful.

Ms Rose says if people are watching the rugby they need to ensure they have a sober driver.

She says pedestrians also need to watch their alcohol consumption if they are walking around, and in the last 12 months a number of intoxicated pedestrians have been hit after walking out in front of traffic.

This year's first fatality was on Saturday when a man died in crash on State Highway 2 in the Napier suburb of Bayview about 7am.

Two cars collided when one crossed the centre line.

The dead man, in his 20s, was the driver of one of the vehicles.

Two people in the other car were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a serious condition.

The holiday period ends at 6am on Tuesday.
