Police cars rammed in slow speed chase

6:02 am on 23 October 2011

A man has appeared in Greymouth District Court after two police cars were rammed with a ten tonne bus in a chase that lasted 15 minutes but covered less than two kilometres.

Police say the bus was spotted on Friday night with no front lights and officers tried to stop it on State Highway 6 just south of Hokitika.

They say the driver crashed into the back of one police car, continued down the road at 10 kilometres an hour then swerved into another patrol car.

Officers boarded the moving vehicle after the man left the driver's seat. They threatened him with a taser then arrested him.

A 36-year-old man is charged with assault with a weapon and failing to comply with prohibition.

Further charges are expected.
