75 SH1 corner infringement notices issued

Police in Christchurch say motorists are continuing to take excessive risks on bends along a treacherous stretch of road in North Canterbury.

Drivers were targeted during Labour weekend when 75 infringement notices were issued to drivers caught on the wrong side of the road when approaching blind bends on State Highway 1, south of Kaikoura.

Sergeant John Hamilton says most drivers are careful when driving on bends, but there were still too many taking a gamble with the lives of their passengers and other road users.

However, he says there were indications that a long-term campaign is having positive effects.

In the three years prior to the campaign, there were six fatal crashes in the area - but there have been none in the past three years.
