Vector says welding work has started on the broken Maui pipeline. Thousands of companies have been without gas since a break was found in the pipe earlier this week.
Vector says a team worked overnight on Thursday night to make a piece of pipe to replace the broken section.
Welding on Friday has been difficult because of wet and boggy conditions, it says, but the team is making good progress, working around the clock.
Medium-sized commercial and industrial customers such as large hotels and shopping malls were reconnected to the gas supply on Friday, and Vector hopes full supply will be restored by Sunday night or Monday morning.
Mr McKenzie estimates the pipe will be welded in place on Saturday. Testing will follow before the pipeline can be repressurised and filled with gas.
