The world premiere of the first of the Hobbit films in Wellington next year is expected to generate about $9 million for the city's economy.

In 2003, the capital hosted the world premiere of the final of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Positively Wellington Tourism chief executive David Perks says that single event made $9.5 million and he expects the same this time round.

But more important, he says, is the international media attention on Wellington.
