Teen driver on restricted licence dies in crash

12:18 pm on 1 November 2011

A 17-year-old man has died and three other people have been taken to hospital after the car they were travelling in crashed into a power pole in Cambridge.

Police say the car spun out of control for about 50 metres after hitting the pole on Browning Rd just after midnight on Sunday morning.

The car eventually hit a tree.

Police believe the teenage driver who died was on a restricted licence.

They say it appears he was driving too fast for the road conditions and lost control of the vehicle.

One of the passengers, a 20-year-old man, is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.
