Woman eighth to be hit by bus after road changes

Another pedestrian has been hit by a bus in downtown Wellington.

Eight people have now been hit by buses in the Manners Street area, one of them fatally, since street layouts were changed last year.

The 30-year-old woman involved in the latest accident has been taken to Wellington Hospital with minor head injuries.

She was hit just before 10am on Wednesday at the intersection of Cuba Street and Manners Street.

Wellington City Council removed a long-established pedestrian mall and re-directed traffic on several adjacent streets last year in an attempt to make public transport more efficient.

Since then, eight people have been hit by buses in the area.

A 40-year-old woman hit by a bus on Willis Street in June died later in hospital.

Four others were seriously injured and two suffered minor injuries.

A group opposed to the introduction of buses to Manners Mall say it's not surprised another pedestrian has been hit by a bus there.

The president of The City Is Ours, Maria van der Meel, says more people will be hurt as the number of people living in Wellington's central city increases.
