Homicide inquiry into Whanganui death

4:23 pm on 2 November 2011

Police in Whanganui have begun a homicide inquiry into the death of a 25-year-old man, who they believe was fatally injured in a fight.

They were called to a disturbance at a town house in the suburb of Gonville at 11.40pm on Tuesday night, arriving to find the man had already been driven to hospital.

The say he died shortly after arriving at Whanganui Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby says about 15 people had been socialising at the house before a disagreement turned into a more serious fight, in which the man was injured.

He says the police don't yet know exactly how his injuries were caused but are treating his death as suspicious.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kirby says officers are interviewing the other people who were at the house, where a scene examination is underway.

Officers want to know about a red Ford Telstar vehicle used to take the victim to hospital.

The name of the dead man will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

A post-mortem will be done on Thursday.
