The police in Christchurch say low levels of reported burglary in the central city red zone since the February earthquake show rumours of rampant crime are unfounded.

Christchurch Central Area Commander Inspector Derek Erasmus, says the police have analysed the 28 reported burglaries in the red zone between 22 February and 13 October.

A total of 103 people have been arrested under earthquake legislation for breaching the red zone cordon.

Mr Erasmus says while there have been some burglaries in the central city, the levels are not alarming and there's no evidence of widespread looting as rumoured.
