Chilly temperatures easing in lower South Island

9:00 pm on 6 November 2011

MetService says the bad weather in the lower South Island has eased, and the area is warming up again.

MetService says temperatures dropped to zero on Saturday morning in Queenstown with snow and rain.

There were reports of snow at Invercargill airport, where the temperature fell to about 3°C.

Residents in eastern areas of the South Island woke to hail and a light dusting of snow.

Police said ice and snow caused motorists some problems on State Highway One, north of Dunedin near Pigeon Flat.

Two trucks had to be towed from snow near Clinton, in Southland, but while it had been snowing all morning from Invercargill north, there were few crashes.

Grapes hit by frost

Grape-growers in central Otago say it will be a couple of days before they know what damage has been done to new leaf buds hit by frost overnight.

But one grower John Mathieson of Alexandra, says his plants survived unscathed.

They were powerless to fight the frost while snow was falling.

Gibbston Valley viticultural consultant Gary Crabb says it was near zero degrees overnight, snowing constantly, too windy and too cold to use wind machines.

Friday night's temperature was around 0°C, which meant there was no inversion layer.
