Police still investigating officer accused of assault

Police have yet to reach an outcome of their internal investigation into a West Auckland officer seven months after he was acquitted of assaulting prisoners.

Sergeant Martin Folan remains a police employee but has been on suspension since he was first charged with assault in February 2010.

He was acquitted in April this year after a jury trial in which several other police officers were crown witnesses.

The police launched a professional standards investigation at the end of the trial but will not say how close it is to being completed.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been investigating but says it is waiting for the internal police investigation before it continues.

A police spokesperson says under employment law, suspended employees receive full pay.
