A Bay of Plenty dairy farmer has been fined $26,000 for allowing effluent to be discharged near a waterway.

Warneford Farms Limited has appeared in Tauranga District Court facing charges under the Resource Management Act.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council says dairy effluent was discharged from an irrigator onto land near Nukuhou in November last year, resulting in the effluent going into a waterway.

Another dairy farm Glenholme Farms Limited appeared in the same court earlier on a similar charge and was found guilty.

Sentencing for Glenholme Farms will be held next week.
