Girl's death being treated as homicide

Police in Christchurch have named a teenage girl who was found dead after a suspicious house fire in the suburb of Somerfield on Thursday.

She was Jade Louise Bayliss, aged 13, of Somerfield, and her death is being treated as a homicide.

Detective Inspector Virginia Le Bas says Jade was a student at Cashmere High School, but had been at home sick on Thursday.

She says she lived with her mother at the Barrington St address where her body was found.

Ms Le Bas says it is an absolute tragedy that a 13-year old girl should lose her life in such awful circumstances.

She says her family have been through an incredible trauma in the past 24 hours, and have asked for privacy.

Meanwhile, two men questioned as part of police inquiries have been arrested on charges that police say may or may not be directly related to the teenager's death.

Aged 40 and 34, they have been remanded in custody and will appear in court in Rangiora on Tuesday.

Police say a post-mortem indicates Jade died in unnatural circumstances, but more work needs to be done to confirm the cause of death.
