Man allowed to stay due to danger over internet role

An Iranian man is being allowed to stay in New Zealand as a refugee because his involvement with a Christian internet group puts him in danger if he is deported.

The man converted to Christianity while living here and says he would face persecution if he returns to Iran.

He told the Immigration and Protection Tribunal that he established a Facebook group while in New Zealand to share and promote the Christian faith with Iranians and oppose the regime in Tehran.

The tribunal found the man has a well-founded fear of being persecuted and it was likely he would face punishment if authorities in Iran found his Facebook page.
