NZRU investigates allegations of a drunken assault

The New Zealand Rugby Union says it is investigating a media report that the All Black Zac Guildford was drunk at a Rarotonga bar and assaulted two patrons.

John Woods from the Cook Islands News says witnesses told his paper that Guildford was naked and had a gash on his head when he entered the bar, Trader Jacks.

NZRU general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorensen says they only learned of the allegations against Guildford on Sunday through the media.

The rugby union called a special media conference on the issue and said that during the Rugby World Cup, Guildford had put himself on an alcohol ban.

In September, Guildford admitted he had a problem with alcohol.

Neil Sorensen says Guildford has come to the attention of the Union three times over the past year because of alcohol.

He says they want to establish the facts before they make any decision on the 22-year-old's future.
