Police in Balclutha say they have not yet identified the body of a man found in the Clutha River.

Acting Sergeant Murray Hewitson says the body was found by a police search and rescue team in the river's Kaitangata branch about one kilometre east of Stirling township on Wednesday.

The team has been searching the river for Michael Dippie, 55, who disappeared more than two weeks ago.

Sergeant Hewitson says the body must have been in the river for some time.

He says he can not say whose it is until a post mortem and other identification procedures have been carried out.
