Millions spent transferring passengers from rail to buses

KiwiRail has spent more than $10 million putting passengers on buses instead of trains in the past two years.

Figures obtained by Radio New Zealand News show that almost $2 million of the $10 million came from unplanned disruptions to its services around the country.

KiwiRail says the other $8 million plus was spent on providing buses when it shut down parts of its Wellington network for upgrade work.

Of those upgrading costs, $3.9 million were spent in the last fiscal year.
