The trial of a man accused of murdering a baby has begun at the High Court at Auckland.
Cezar Taylor, aged six months, died in Starship Hospital in July last year.
James Hemana, the baby's mother's partner at the time, denies murdering the infant.
He has pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life.
Crown Prosecutor Josh Shaw described several incidents to the jury, during which he said the accused violently shook and dropped the baby repeatedly.
The court heard the baby's mother was prevented from seeking medical help for several weeks.
Mr Shaw says Mr Hemana was jealous of the baby's father and took that anger and frustration out on the child.
The trial is expected to last at least two weeks.
