Police in Hamilton say cries for help from a woman being badly beaten for hours in a domestic incident were ignored by people nearby.

They say the woman, 25, was subjected to a prolonged assault over several hours on Saturday night and into early Sunday morning.

She has fractured ribs, a fractured wrist, kidney damage, lacerations and bruising to her head.

A man, also 25, has been charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police say a number of people heard the woman's screams but it wasn't until one person had finally heard enough that the police were called.

They say people must call the police straight away and not think they are being nosy neighbours because prompt action could save a life.
