Arrest after Police Commissioner asks officers to act

Police have arrested a woman in connection with defrauding a Wellington travel agency five months after a complaint was made.

The owners of Maher Travel, Ross and Raynor Wilson, made a police complaint in June, but no action was taken.

Police said on Monday night the woman has been charged with theft and will appear in the Wellington District Court on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, Commissioner Peter Marshall said he did not know why police in the capital did not act sooner.

The woman has reportedly confessed to defrauding her former employers of $80,000.

Mr Marshall says the service the Wilsons received is unsatisfactory.

He says he does not know if the police did not get around to investigating due to other priorities, but had told them to act.

Mr Marshall says when he referred an August letter from the Wilsons on to Wellington police, he was given assurances the investigation would be undertaken and is surprised it had not been.
