A new central police station is to be built in Rotorua at a cost of about $18 million.

The announcement was made by Police Minister Judith Collins in the city on Monday afternoon.

The new station will be built on the current police station site in Fenton Street, is expected to be operational by the end of 2013.

It will also house the Bay of Plenty police district headquarters.

Officers will work in temporary offices across the road after the existing station is demolished early next year.

The new station will incorporate a custodial unit opened three years ago.
