Kapiti caravans to be subject to rules for buildings

1:00 pm on 25 November 2011

Caravans and campervans at camp grounds on the Kapiti coast will now require building consents.

The Kapiti Coast District Council is enforcing the Building Act requirement on campervans that are no longer capable of being taken on the road.

Structures going up now or in the future must get a building consent, while the owners of trailer homes placed on sites since the act came into force in 1992 must apply for a Certificate of Acceptance.

Council regulatory manager Ken Smith says those affected are happy to comply and met with a council representative to discuss the changes.

Mr Smith says he has heard that the new consents may also make getting insurance easier for the campervan owners.
