$70,000 fine over steam roller accident

1:49 pm on 25 November 2011

Two Taranaki companies have been fined more than $70,000 after a worker was pinned under a steam roller.

The Department of Labour says an employee at Taranaki Civil Constructions suffered a compound fracture to his arm and lacerations to his head and neck when the machine he was using went down a bank and trapped him underneath.

The department says the roller did not have a safety belt or roll cage and the company that owned it, Graham Harris Limited, failed to make sure it was safe.

Both Graham Harris and Taranaki Civil Constructions have been fined for failing to take reasonable steps to prevent the accident.
