The promoter of Elton John's one-off Dunedin concert on Friday is confident the sound will be up to scratch.

Elton John is playing to a sold-out crowd of more than 35,000 at Dunedin's new stadium. It is his southern-most-ever concert.

Fans are nervous the sound will not be up to scratch after problems at a community concert at the venue.

Concert promoter Phil Sprey says he is using the best sound system in the country and the rock star's best sound experts.

high winds hamper preparations

High winds are hampering preparations for the concert.

Production manager Andre Goldsmith says gusts of 100 kilometres an hour have been recorded and they are forecast to rise to 120 kilometres before easing.

The stadium is fully covered but there are some open spaces.

Some banners have been damaged around the stadium and the crew is busy trying to seal gaps.
