Case of measles and whooping cough cases are up significantly and people are being urged to get vaccinated.

Wellington Regional Public Health says the number of confirmed or suspected cases of whooping cough in its region alone has risen from 36 in October to 129 so far in November.

There have been more than 400 cases of measles nationally this year, the highest number since 1997 when there were about 1900 cases.

Medical Officer of Health Margot McLean says several cases of measles and whooping cough have required hospitalisation and the best defence against them is vaccination.
