Man charged with girl's murder remanded in custody

A man charged with the murder of a Christchurch teenager in her home has been remanded in custody until next year.

After a brief appearance at the Rangiora District Court on Tuesday, Jeremy George Edward McLaughlin, 34, a labourer from Waltham, was remanded until 20 January.

Mr McLaughlin is charged with murdering Jade Louise Bayliss, aged 13, burgling the house and setting fire to it on 10 November.

He also faces an earlier charge of criminal harassment relating to the girl's mother.

Another man, who has name suppression, has been charged with helping the accused avoid arrest. He did not appear on Tuesday and remains in custody.
