Wellington City Council is struggling to keep on top of the rapid growth of grass, which is out of control following a warm and wet few months.
Since the beginning of November, 70 complaints have been received from residents wondering when their grassy roadsides will be dealt with.
Parks and gardens manager Paul Andrews is urging people to be patient and suggests they mow grassy patches themselves if they wish.
He says a team of a dozen mowers is tending to the most important grounds first. But some places, particularly fields where winter sports are played, will be let go for a while.
