Weather halts play in first NZ/Australia test

7:58 pm on 1 December 2011

Bad light and rain have forced an early end to day one of the first cricket Test against Australia at the Gabba, with New Zealand recovering from a poor start to be 176 for five.

After winning the toss and batting in bowling-friendly conditions, the Black Caps were on the ropes at 5 for 96 before a fightback from veteran spinner Daniel Vettori and Dean Brownlie.

Vettori, 45 not out, and Brownlie, 32 not out, will resume their 78-run partnership on Friday morning.
