Charges laid for workplace death

7:58 pm on 1 December 2011

The Department of Labour has laid three charges after an investigation into a workplace accident near Wellington that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The dead man and his colleague were working on high power lines near Makara in June 2011 when the cherry-picker vehicle they were in fell sideways down a hill.

The department will not say who has been charged or what the charges are, but it says in a statement the three parties charged have breached the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

They say too many people are being killed at work and employers must be aware that they're responsible under the Act to provide a safe working environment.
