Slow progress for Tasman rowers

8:11 pm on 2 December 2011

Four New Zealand rowers attempting to cross the Tasman Sea are making slow progress after storms confined them to two small cabins on the boat.

The men set sail from Sydney five days ago on board their 10.5 metre boat, Moana.

They made good progress in the first 48 hours, covering 200 km, but then the weather deteriorated and high waves made it impossible to continue rowing.

They have been experiencing winds of up to 40 knots and waves 3 to 4 metres high have been crashing over the boat.

The weather is expected to improve next week.
