Police recruits in Wellington got some unexpected on-the-job training when they found a house fire while on a cross-country run.
The recruits were running in the suburb of Papakowhai on Friday afternoon when they noticed the burning house.
Inspector Sean McManus says they got some hoses from neighbouring properties and doused the fire, keeping it under control until the Fire Service arrived.
Mr McManus says once their firefighting experience was over, they continued their run.
He says the homeowner is grateful for their quick-thinking action.
