Disqualified driver in fatal truck smash - police

7:00 pm on 4 December 2011

Police have revealed that one of the trucks involved in a double fatality crash on the outskirts of Hamilton on Saturday morning was driven by a disqualified driver.

Police say the crash happened when a truck driven by Jarrad Malcolm Townsend, 32, of Tauranga crossed the centre line and collided head on with a truck being driven by Hugh Leonard Ferguson, 61, of Hamilton.

Both men died.

Police say the crash is being investigated but it has been learned one of the drivers was disqualified from driving at the time.

Inspector Leo Tooman says both drivers died at the scene and an 18-year-old passenger was taken to Waikato Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

SH26 near the intersection with Badger Close was closed for several hours but reopened early on Saturday afternoon.
