Police say a man who shot a woman outside Tokoroa police station on Saturday tied up and assaulted another woman the day before.

The body of Jamie David Ginns, 32, was found near a vehicle in the Mamuku Forest near Tokoroa on Saturday night. No one else is being sought in connection with the shooting.

The woman who was shot, Matakapua Glassie, 36, remains in a critical but stable condition in Waikato Hospital. Her condition has improved slightly but she is still in intensive care.

Police say they are still investigating the shooting. They say Mr Ginns followed Ms Glassie in his car as she drove at speed into Tokoroa and towards the police station. As she pulled up outside it, he shot her.

Police say Mr Ginns was not known to them and the incident came out of the blue.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Verry says Mr Ginns is a person of interest in an investigation into another incident on Friday when a woman, 23, who was known to him, was tied up and assaulted.

Police say Ms Glassie and the victim of Friday's assault did not know each other.
