Police are appealing for witnesses to an unprovoked attack on a 42-year-old man in Christchurch on Saturday.

Detective Joel Syme says the man was walking toward Cambridge Terrace between Barbadoes Street and Churchill Street between 5pm and 5.45pm when he was approached by two men.

The man was knocked to the ground and viciously beaten about the face and head.

He suffered extensive facial injuries, including bruises to his nose, eyes and temple, grazes to his forehead and nose and a cut on his cheek.

His cellphone and keys were stolen.

Mr Syme says the attackers are believed to Pakeha, aged between 20 to 25 years old and of medium to large build.
