An abseiler who fell more than four floors during a street theatre performance is recovering in Auckland City Hospital.

The woman fell from the Metro Building in Aotea Square about 11am on Thursday as she was participating in a performance commissioned by the Auckland Council's entertainment company, The Edge.

A witness says she fell about four-and-a half storeys on to concrete where she lay unconscious and unable to move.

An Auckland District Health Board spokesperson says the woman is in a stable condition in a general ward and is being kept overnight for observation.

The Edge says it hired the group to put on a series of performances called Vertical Auckland.

Spokesperson Paul Brewer says the group is highly experienced and has performed at Metro Building venue three times, as well as during the recent Rugby World Cup and internationally.

An Occupational Safety and Health investigation is under way.
