Waitaki council to discuss court closures

9:17 pm on 6 December 2011

Waitaki District Council is to discuss its options after last week's announcement that the Oamaru and Balclutha district courts are to close temporarily.

The Ministry of Justice has closed six court buildings for up to a year for earthquake-strengthening.

The court building in Oamaru is rated at 13% of the building code, not much more than a third of the standard required by law. Built of whitestone, it is 130 years old.

The council says it is conscious of the importance of access to local court services.

Other courts being closed are in Upper Hutt, Masterton, Feilding and Rangiora.
