Dean of Cathedral quits to run for council

1:45 pm on 7 December 2011

The Dean of Christchurch Cathedral is stepping down after nine years, so he can stand in a forthcoming by-election.

Peter Beck has been at the helm of the Cathedral for nine years, and has led the community through recent hardships, including the planned partial demolition of the building.

He says he is still committed to playing a leadership role in the recovery, and the best way he can do this is to campaign for a seat on Christchurch City Council, representing the Burwood-Pegasus ward.

The position became vacant when Cr Chrissie Williams resigned in September, citing a dysfunctional relationship between staff and councillors, and a lack of leadership from the mayor.

Nominations close on 22 December and the by-election will be held in February.
