Landmark plane restored and back on show

A landmark aircraft in Christchurch has been officially re-dedicated at a ceremony after more than 18 months in maintenance.

The 70-year-old Harvard NZ1050, a former New Zealand Air Force plane, has been returned to its perch overlooking the corner of Main South Road and Harvard Avenue near the Wigram Air Force Museum.

The museum's collections manager says the plane had corroded after nearly 40 years in the spot and nearly $100,000 was spent fixing it.

David Watmuff says while it is the biggest restoration work yet on the plane it will not last forever, and predicts that in about 20 years it will be beyond repair.
