Striking port workers still hoping for resolution

6:23 am on 10 December 2011

The union representing striking dock workers in Auckland says it wants to resolve outstanding grievances with Ports of Auckland.

More than 300 workers began a 24 hour strike at 10.30pm on Friday.

Ports of Auckland says four days of industrial action earlier this week cost it $1.2 million and it estimates this weekend's strike will cost another $950,000.

Maritime Union president Garry Parsloe says further strike notices have been issued for 23 and 25 December but the union hopes to avoid action.

"We hope that a bit of common sense takes place and we can get back there on Thursday, which gives us plenty of time to get a resolution and have no more industrial action," he says.

Ports of Auckland says it is disappointed the current strike is happening but it plans to meet with the union again next week.
