A 63-year-old Nelson man has died after he slipped and fell while tramping in Kahurangi National Park.

Police say John Leo Hannah and two companions were negotiating a difficult stretch of terrain in an area known as the Adelaide Tarn about 7pm on Friday when Mr Hannah slipped and fell 20 metres to his death.

His friends were able to reach him but could not resucitate him.

They activated their emergency locator beacon and were airlifted out by rescue helicopter.

Police say Mr Hannah's body will be recovered on Saturday.

His death has been referred to the coroner.
