Homicide investigation into death of baby

Police have opened a homicide investigation into the death of an Auckland baby who was admitted to hospital with severe head injuries in November.

Terepo Taura-Griffiths, who was 12 months old, died in Starship hospital on 6 November.

Police say a post-mortem has revealed the baby died from a skull fracture to the rear of his head and a massive brain bleed.

They believe the injuries were caused shortly before he was taken to hospital two days before his death.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says at the time the baby sustained his injuries he was in the care of a married couple in the suburb of Otahuhu.

He says explanations provided do not explain the severity of the fatal injury.

The investigation will now focus on reconstructing events during the week prior to the child being taken to hospital.
