Police in Dunedin are interviewing the last witness to an early morning assault in Dunedin on Saturday and expect to lay more charges on Sunday.

A 28-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after an incident on the corner of George Street and Moray Place about 2.30am on Saturday.

Three other men also required medical treatment.

A 25-year-old man appeared in Dunedin District Court on Saturday on an assault charge and was remanded in custody.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken says further charges are likely.

Police want anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious to come forward.
