10:18 pm on 11 December 2011

A woman has been killed in a level-crossing crash.

Police say she died when the car she was driving was hit by a train at an uncontrolled crossing near Levin on Sunday evening.

They say though the train driver braked immediately, the 500-metre-long freight train continued for 600 metres before coming to a stop with the car trapped underneath it.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, is thought to have been the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Serious Crash Investigation Unit is investigating.
