Police have recaptured a prisoner who tried to escape by climbing into a toilet ceiling cavity at Waikato Hospital.
They say the 24-year-old inmate was being escorted by Department of Corrections staff when the incident happened about 11am on Wednesday.
Police say the man got into the ceiling, crawled along to an access tunnel and managed to get down to the floor below before smashing his way into an administrative area.
They say he was heard banging around and recaptured.
The department says the remand prisoner was at the hospital for a scheduled medical appointment.
It says the incident is being investigated.
