Police are investigating the circumstances in which a 43-year-old man died after a serious assault in the West Auckland suburb of Ranui.
The assault happened on 17 November this year. Police say the victim initially did not seek medical care, but later began to feel unwell.
An ambulance was called after a friend became concerned for his wellbeing and he was eventually taken to Auckland Hospital on 28 November.
The man's condition deteriorated and he died in hospital of a bacterial infection on 3 December.
At the coroner's request, Waitakere police are reviewing the circumstances of the assault and the culmination of events that resulted in the man's death.
