Battery export appeal lost

12:00 pm on 16 December 2011

Exide has failed in a bid to stop used batteries being shipped overseas.

The Court of Appeal was considering a legal challenge by Exide to a policy of the Ministry of Economic Development for issuing permits allowing companies to ship old batteries offshore.

Exide argued the batteries should be processed at its plant in Petone and that sending them overseas contravened the Basel Convention to reduce the international transport of hazardous waste.

The Court has dismissed the appeal.
