Lawyer says report on suicide opens possibility of fresh charges

A top lawyer believes the police may be able to extradite an American woman to this country following the release of a coroner's report into a New Zealand woman's suicide.

Audrey Wallis, 49, died in 2007 after enlisting the help of North Carolina-based euthenasia campaigner Susan Wilson.

In a report released on Tuesday, coroner Katherine Greig found that Mrs Wallis' death was self-inflicted.

She said Ms Wilson helped in preparations for the suicide and was present when it took place.

Ms Wilson was charged by New Zealand police with assisting suicide last year but cannot be extradited under that charge.

The coroner's report said Ms Wilson has admitted that she removed evidence of the way Ms Wallis died.

Auckland barrister Grant Illingworth QC says the police could, therefore, consider charging Ms Wilson with obstructing justice which is an extradictable offence.

The police will not comment whether that charge has been, or could be, considered.
