Union calls for urgent action on forestry worker deaths

9:14 am on 20 December 2011

The union representing forestry workers' is calling for urgent action to prevent deaths at work.

A coroner has criticised the health and safety practices at Pelorus Contracting where a Blenheim logger died last year.

Sean Mortensen, who was 34, was crushed after a tree broke loose from equipment while being felled.

First Union general secretary Robert Reid says he believes deregulation has led to serious shortcomings.

Mr Reid says greater involvement from unions, better training and more Department of Labour inspections would lead to a massive reduction in the number of deaths.

He says an average of five forestry workers die on the job each year.
